Community Safety

We stand for a public health approach to safety grounded in prevention and the lived experiences of communities

Community Safety

January–March 2026 Advocacy Highlights

We joined partners to strengthen and protect federal investments in a public health approach to community safety. We advocated for sustained and expanded funding for community violence intervention through the DOJ, including restoring access to funding for community-based organizations, and supported funding for CDC’s Injury Control and Prevention Center, including the Youth Violence Prevention program and firearm injury and mortality prevention research.

2025 Advocacy Highlights

Through legislative advocacy and appropriations engagement, we advanced a prevention-oriented vision of community safety. We endorsed the People’s Response Act, the Mental Health Justice Act, and the Break the Cycle of Violence Act, which invest in community-based, non-carceral approaches to crisis response and violence prevention. We engaged appropriators to secure sustained funding for community violence intervention and prevention programs at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and Department of Justice, and helped safeguard the CDC’s Injury Control and Prevention Center—including through participation in the Keep America Safe Coalition—by opposing proposed cuts, restructuring, and elimination efforts that would undermine evidence-informed community safety infrastructure.
