Landscape Scan for the Houston Metropolitan Statistical Area
Partnering with the Hogg Foundation for Mental Health, we are seeking to understand what young people and their families in areas with limited access to protective factors need from their communities to be well and whole. Our Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) Landscape Scan gathers insights about the strengths, challenges, and needs of children, youth, and families most directly affected by community conditions that contribute to poor mental health—as well as the organizations most responsive to their experiences.
This scan will produce a comprehensive set of findings to inform the Hogg Foundation for Mental Health’s future strategic investments across the greater Houston MSA, including its urban, suburban, and rural settings. Conducted from April 2025 through March 2027, this work draws on listening, learning, observation, and research activities to generate actionable recommendations and a clear picture of community priorities.
Primary activities:

Conducting multi-method listening, learning, and research activities to understand community needs, assets, and conditions shaping youth mental health.

Engaging children, youth, families, and community-serving organizations across the metropolitan region to gather contextual and experiential insights.

Synthesizing findings into a presentation of preliminary results to share emerging themes and validate insights with the Foundation.

Developing a written recommendations report—including a bibliography—that outlines priority strategies and investment opportunities.

Preparing an executive summary and presentation for the Foundation and partners committed to supporting the mental health and wellbeing of young people in the Greater Houston MSA.
