Standing Together: Affirming Our Commitment to Community, Healing, and Progress

On Wednesday after the election, we gathered as a staff. It was good to be in community, to share and hold space together, and to find comfort and safety in that space.

Today we are reaching out more broadly to convey our gratitude to you as our partner, and to affirm our enduring commitment to achieving thriving, equitable communities.

In the moment, we encouraged our staff to take the time and space they needed for themselves. Self-care can be a form of resistance. Healing is central to agency and progress. We recognize that for many, this will be a time of grieving, and each of us experiences this process in different ways. We understand that grieving can be a non-linear process that ebbs and flows with time. This is normal and part of a longer-term process. We hope you are also taking the time and space you need now. We will need all our collective strength and power moving forward.

Moving forward, we acknowledge that we are part of a community, here at Prevention Institute and beyond. There is power and comfort in connection, and we are encouraging our staff members to reach out to their communities and stay connected. Our staff are also compiling resources for the communities we partner with day in and day out, and many of these resources come from partners like you. We hope you know you are not alone; we are in this together, and we will keep on together.

Keeping on, we assure our staff and partners that our overarching purpose; our mission; our affirmative vision for the future; and our values—including connection, dignity, and interdependence—will not change. Our path ahead was always going to be challenging. Now that the way forward is even more difficult, our work is even more essential.

Our vision is that all people experience their full potential for health, safety, and wellbeing across the life course through thriving, equitable communities.
We will continue to center our work in community practice and community-driven solutions; we will continue to uplift contextual and experiential evidence from communities that disproportionately experience the biggest burden of illness and injury; and we will continue to push for health equity, including by fighting for racial justice.

We draw great comfort in knowing that all our partners share the same convictions to remain true to their vision, values, and purpose.

As our Timeline of Resistance affirms, progress has been made in this country through resistance. So, looking ahead, we will navigate this together, struggle together, and yes, even celebrate together. We are grateful to be part of a strong and compassionate ecosystem with so many of you. We know that achieving our affirmative vision is not a sprint, but a marathon. And as a community, we will move forward together.
