We need to get to the bottom of what drug companies have done to fuel the opioid epidemic and hold the pharmaceutical industry accountable for the damage it has unleashed.
That means fully exposing industry deception, regulatory failures, and negative public health consequences. This would ultimately harness industry profits to support treatments and also prevention. It would also address the very conditions that left communities vulnerable to Big Pharma’s predatory marketing and sales strategies in the first place.
Pharmaceutical companies have pursued profits at enormous social costs, while leaving communities holding the bag.
That means we need to give communities the resources they need to rebuild long-underfunded public health infrastructure. We also need to address the community-level factors underlying substance misuse and other diseases of despair. This can include the need for stronger social networks, local economic development and living-wage jobs; opportunities for community members to come together to heal and thrive.
