New video on countering violence with community pride, diversity, creativity

The East San Jose PEACE Partnership is shifting the narrative about its community

Prevention Institute is honored to be working in partnership with the Santa Clara County Department of Public Health in support of the East San Jose PEACE Partnership. PEACE stands for Prevention Efforts Advance Community Equity.

This new two-minute video spotlights how the PEACE Partnership—a group of residents, community-based organizations, and government agencies—is working to build a healthy, peaceful, and empowered community in East San Jose. (Learn more about the Partnership below.) To counteract the conditions that have led to a high level of community violence and trauma, the Partnership is changing the narrative that surrounds East San Jose to emphasize the community’s strengths and resilience.

We hope you’ll share this video, which was co-created by PI, on Facebook and Twitter and with your networks of organizations and activists who value narrative change as part of a successful strategy to improve health, safety, wellbeing, and health equity.

Alan Jenkins of The Opportunity Agenda explains the need for narrative change in an excellent blog for the Haas Institute for a Fair and Inclusive Society. One of the points he makes is that “audiences will interpret the same facts differently, depending on the narrative that is most salient in their minds.”

About the East San Jose PEACE Partnership

The East San Jose PEACE Partnership is made up of neighborhood residents, grassroots community organizations, businesses, healthcare organizations, schools, youth leaders, and many Santa Clara County and San Jose government agencies.

With leadership from the Santa Clara County Department of Public Health and funding from the California Accountable Communities for Health Initiative (CACHI), they’re working to achieve health equity for East San Jose residents by pushing for policies and practices to improve the community environment. These include things like advocating for affordable housing, promoting safe relationships, reducing access to dangerous weapons, creating community gathering spaces, and beautifying the neighborhood.

They’re also putting hope and healing at the center of their activism for policy change. As part of PI’s work supporting the PEACE Partnership, we were able to provide them with tools like our Adverse Community Experiences and Resilience (ACE|R) framework to assess challenges they face as a community and strengths they possess. The ACE|R framework helped the PEACE Partnership incorporate healing and resilience into its community-level strategies to promote health equity.

Learn more about communities across the US that are using the ACE|R framework to address community and domestic violence, mental health and suicide, substance misuse, Adverse Childhood Experiences, and climate change, among other issues.

PI is available to provide training, technical assistance, and consulting to organizations and coalitions doing work similar to that of the PEACE Partnership.
