Here’s how you can connect with PI at APHA

Join Prevention Institute at the 2019 American Public Health Association (APHA) meeting in Philadelphia from November 2 - 6. This year's theme is "Creating the Healthiest Nation: For science. For action. For health."

PI’s executive director, Rachel A. Davis, will be honored with the 2019 American Public Health Association Award for Excellence. This award is given each year to a living individual in recognition of exceptionally meritorious contributions to improve community health. Rachel is receiving the award for her “forward thinking vision, outstanding leadership, and commitment to creating thriving, equitable communities.” She is also being recognized for having co-developed tools and frameworks that contributed to a shift in how violence is approached locally and nationally.

Community Engagement in Latinx Communities for Health Equity
Jason Lacsamana from St. Joseph Health Community Partnership Fund (our partner in our Intersections initiative work with seven California communities) will present: Addressing the Intersection of Health and Housing for Latinx Communities: Experiences from the field.
Addressing health equity through programs, initiatives and policies that create healthier communities
PI’s Sana Chehimi will present Designing a System of Prevention to Advance Health, Safety, and Wellbeing for All.
Mental and Behavioral Health: The Hidden Inequity
Dr. Lisa Cacari Stone, associate professor of health and social policy at the College of Population Health at the University of New Mexico and PI board member, will present Systems Change.

*Plenary Session* Empowering Equity 2: What’s Poverty, the Census & Community Engagement Got To Do with It?
During this plenary session moderated by Anthony Iton and Elena Ong, Rachel Davis will present Poverty as a Public Health Matter.

Tuesday, November 5th

1:00-2:30pm

Racial equity and gun violence prevention: successes and challenges of local public health systems
PI’s Lisa Fujie Parks will moderate, and Reggie Moore, director of the City of Milwaukee Office of Violence Prevention and PI board member, will speak on the panel.

1:30-2:30pm

Addressing Trauma & Resilience at the Community Level
PI’s Sheila Savannah will moderate this panel and present: Applying the Adverse Community Experiences and Resilience Framework to Interventions in Communities Across the US.

3:00-4:30pm

Addressing Community Trauma and Building Community Resilience to Prevent Opioid Misuse and Addiction
Sana Chehimi will moderate, and Sheila Savannah will present Community-level approaches to prevent opioid misuse and addiction.

6:30-9:00pm

Public Health Awards Ceremony
PI’s Rachel Davis will be honored with the 2019 American Public Health Association Award for Excellence. All are welcome to attend.
