From a cycle of violence to a culture of safety: Leveraging connections to prevent multiple forms of violence

Date Published:  October 2017

Summary

Direct experience as well as exposure to multiple forms of violence can have a compounding negative impact on children’s development. Despite the strong relationship, the fields of practice addressing different forms of violence have largely been silo-ed. This brief summarizes five connections between child maltreatment, intimate partner violence, and community violence and makes the case for an integrated movement for safety in our homes and communities. It draws on recent research and analysis on the linkages between multiple forms of violence and offers examples of emerging actions to address the linkages.

Salinas, CA – City of Salinas

Jose Arreola shares strategies that involve families to break cycles of violence and address intergenerational trauma, such as wrap-around services for children who experience trauma as well as their younger siblings. Systems change in Salinas has been supported by organizations and sectors acting on shared knowledge and insights on prevention, such as the importance of primary prevention, and policies supporting access to early care and education.
