First Steps: Taking Action Early to Prevent Violence

Action Alliance for Children, Fight Crime: Invest in Kids California

Date Published:  June 2002

Summary

The last decade of research on violence prevention resulted in the understanding that violence prevention needs to start earlier and that acting as early as possible, in the first five years of life, is critical to success. The First Steps report, funded by the David and Lucile Packard Foundation, and done in collaboration with Action Alliance for Children and Fight Crime: Invest in Kids California, synthesizes this research, presents best practices, and offers a comprehensive strategy to start effective violence prevention efforts at an early age. The First Steps guide summarizes the framework and findings of the larger report, presents short descriptions of the key strategy suggestions, and includes brief case studies to illustrate some best practices. This report utilizes The Spectrum of Prevention.
