Communications Associate with Big Cities Health Coalition

POSITION OVERVIEW – WHAT YOU’LL DO

Your job will be to develop and implement a wide range of communication strategies to extend the reach, influence, and impact of the Big Cities Health Coalition and its members. You will work with the Executive Director of BCHC and the Vice President of de Beaumont Communications to collaboratively create a strategic communications plan — and be responsible for implementing it, including earned, digital, and social media; website content and management; writing and editing of issue papers, reports, blog posts, op-eds, press statements, and other such materials;  and more. You will be expected to remain up to date on evolving policies and practices in the public health/urban health field and use what you learn to recommend strategies and develop content to advance BCHC’s priorities.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Your day-to-day work will include activities like:

  • Writing: Write, edit, and proofread print and digital content, including but not limited to website content, blog posts, issue briefs, program overviews, case studies, and media materials, such as press statements and supporting documentation. Lead the development of the annual report and other publications.
  • Website/Social Media: Lead content strategy and engagement for bigcitieshealth.org and BCHC’s social media channels. Develop and implement an editorial calendar; post and update content on the website; and track and report on web and social analytics.
  • Strategic Communications Planning: Help create and take the lead in implementing a strategic communications plan with audiences, goals, tactics, and metrics to enable the organization to build on its past progress and expand its reach and influence.
  • Media Relations: As part of the strategic communications plan, define media goals and targets for proactive outreach (announcements, reports, promoting the leadership of local officials, etc.) and reactive activities (responding to reporter inquiries, emerging issues, legislative developments, etc.). Cultivate relationships with reporters to help position BCHC as a go-to source on urban public health. Facilitate and garner earned media, including targeted media lists, story angles, and supporting media materials. Draft and edit op-eds for placement in traditional and online outlets.
  • Project Management: Develop and implement editorial calendars for web and social media content. Oversee vendors and consultants, possibly including communications agencies, digital consultants, website developers, designers, printers, photographers, videographers, and others.
  • Creative Development and Technical Tasks: Create or work with designers to create graphics for print, web, and social media. Oversee the organization’s branding guidelines (logo, color, fonts, etc.).

WHO YOU ARE

The ideal candidate will have experience in advocacy communications, media relations, and digital communications and be able to juggle multiple priorities, take initiative, and thrive in a fast-paced environment. He or she will be able to think and work independently, but collaborate well with others, as well as recognize that sometimes work has to happen outside of routine business hours. The strongest candidate will also have health, public health, and/or policy experience/knowledge.

  • Initiative: You are eager to use your role to advance BCHC’s mission and look for ways to help beyond your own core responsibilities. That said, no job is too small for anyone on the team, and your attitude reflects that.
  • Relationship management: You have a good sense of how to manage relationships with members, staff, and partners, as well as build new relationships. You handle confidential information sensitively and use discretion about what information you share with members and partners.

REQUIREMENTS

  • At least five years of experience in strategic communications, preferably including advocacy communications.
  • Exceptional writing, editing, and proofreading skills. Ability to translate complex subject matter for a general audience.
  • Experience developing and implementing editorial plans, including social media content.
  • Comfort and hands-on experience with digital systems and tools, such as WordPress/Squarespace, Google Analytics, Constant Contact and/or MailChimp, Photoshop and/or other photo-editing software, project management systems, and advertising (Google Adwords, SEO, social media marketing, etc.).

WHO WE ARE

BCHC is housed within the de Beaumont Foundation, a long-term funder and partner. The Executive Director, in partnership with the member leadership, has primary oversight of the coalition’s activities. The person hired for this newly created position will be an employee of the de Beaumont Foundation and will report to the Vice President of Communications, directed by the Executive Director of BCHC to meet the organization’s day-to-day communications needs, as well as contribute to high-level strategic discussions under the oversight of the VP of Communications.

HOW TO APPLY

The BCHC team is small and scrappy, service-oriented, and deeply committed to the success of our members and our collaborative agenda to improve urban health.

This position is full-time and based in downtown Bethesda, MD, just outside of Washington, D.C. There may be opportunity for some telework after an initial orientation period, with the expectation of core days in the office.

Some travel is required (a few days every few months) and is typically known well in advance.

We offer a competitive salary, excellent benefits, and a collegial work environment. The salary range for this position is $70,000 to $80,000, commensurate with experience.
