Assistant Director with the California Department of Public Health (CDPH)

The California Department of Public Health (CDPH) is recruiting an experienced, visionary executive.

The Assistant Director, under the direction of the CDPH Director/State Public Health Officer and in collaboration with the Chief Deputy Directors, oversees the work of the Office of Health Equity, the Office of State Public Health Laboratory Director, the California Conference of Local Health Officers, and the Center for Health Care Quality. The incumbent works closely with the Chief Deputy Directors to execute crosscutting initiatives that involve various offices, centers or divisions across the Department. Crosscutting initiatives include, health care reform, state and local government relations, public/private partnerships, and other projects with public health stakeholders.

The Assistant Director exercises discretion and sound judgment when reviewing sensitive and critical correspondence, memoranda, reports and other publications. The incumbent represents the Directorate on major inter- and intra-departmental work groups and activities; and presents critical issues before the Legislature, control agencies, constituency groups, and the public. The Assistant Director serves as a liaison with the California Health and Human Services Agency and the Governor’s Office on policy matters and issues as delegated by and on behalf of the Director.


The IdIdeal Candidate:

  • Has the ability to lead, manage, and direct key public health programs.
  • Can effectively plan for and manage changes in department priorities and operations necessary to respond to public health emergences.
  • Communicate effectively, orally and in writing, with the Governor’s Office, the Health and Human Services Agency, CDPH executives, other state and federal agencies, the Legislature, and CDPH partners, including local health departments.
  • Be a functional part of an executive management team to plan, develop, and implement department policies and priorities.
