Synopsis Requires that 50% food and beverages sold in vending machines in County owned or operated facilities meet specific nutrition standards.
Brief Description
  • Requires vending machines in City buildings to offer 50% healthy beverage offerings defined as: water, coffee or tea, reduced fat milk, 100% fruit/vegetable juice, fruit based drinks containing at least 50% juice and no added caloric sweeteners, and other non-caloric beverages, including diet sodas.
  • Requires vending machines in City buildings to offer 50% healthy snack offerings defined as: no more than 35% calories from fat with the exception of nuts and seeds, not more than 10% of calories from saturated fat, does not contain trans fats, not more than 35% total weight from sugar and caloric sweeteners with the exception of fruits and vegetables that have not been processed with added sweeteners or fats, and at least one item must meet the Food and Drug Administration’s definition of “low sodium” (<140 mg per serving).
  • Also provides regulations on vending machine placement and facility requirements (plumbing, electrical, etc.) for facilities in which vending machines are housed.
Health Implications Access to healthy food options can facilitate people in making healthier choices. Government can play a key role in increasing access to healthy food options among its employees and among community residents who utilize city facilities. Government also sets an important example of what other workplaces can do to improve access to healthy foods. Healthy eating is an essential behavior for reducing risks of diabetes, heart disease, osteoporosis and certain cancers.
