At the foundation of a prosperous, vibrant city are strong families living in neighborhoods where every child can thrive. Across the country, mayors, councilmembers and other local officials are implementing innovative solutions to help young people and families succeed in today's challenging economic environment. In the process, they are improving local quality of life, attracting and retaining residents, promoting economic vitality and building safe and healthy communities.
As a Supporting Organization, Prevention Institute invites you to register for the National Summit on Your City's Families, the nation's largest gathering of municipal leaders who are working to improve the lives of children, youth, and families in their communities. The 2011 Summit will be held November 10-12 in Phoenix as one of four concurrent conferences during NLC's annual Congress of Cities and Exposition.

The high-quality learning and peer networking opportunities at this year's Summit will help local officials confront the pressing challenges facing cities and their residents, from painful budget cuts and a weak job market to rapid demographic change fueled by immigration and an economy that increasingly rewards educational attainment. Key topics of focus will include:
- Education from Early Childhood through College
- Afterschool and Out-of-School Time Programs
- Positive Engagement and Support of Immigrant Families
- Public Safety and Violence Prevention
- Strategies for Reengaging Disconnected Youth
- Strategies to support children's healthy eating and physical activity
- Poverty Reduction and Economic Self-Sufficiency
- Maximizing Resources and Governing in Difficult Budget Times
- Data-Driven and Place-Based Strategies
- Civic Engagement and Service
Because an entire community shares responsibility for the well-being of children and youth, local leaders benefit most from the Summit when they attend as part of a city team that may include elected officials, senior municipal staff, school district leaders, United Way and foundation executives, youth, and other key partners. City teams of three or more will be able to work with a facilitator to develop strategic plans for taking action upon returning home.
