Presenter: Jonathan Shepherd CBE F
MedSci Professor, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Director,
Violence Research Group
Cardiff University

Jonathan Shepherd's contributions to policy, legislation and practice in violence prevention, trauma services and tackling alcohol misuse stem from his continuing clinical practice and research. His discoveries include the great extent to which violence resulting in emergency treatment is not known to the police and the effectiveness of partnership interventions. He summarised implications for clinical services and violence prevention in 10 BMJ and Lancet editorials. His proposals that the NHS should be a responsible authority in crime prevention were adopted by the Government in the 1998 Crime and Disorder Act. In 1996 he set up and continues to chair a prototype UK Community Safety Partnership between Cardiff County Council, South Wales Police, the NHS and Cardiff University. In 2007, Cardiff became the safest city in its family of 15 similar cities. His group’s research findings were taken up in the 2003 Licensing Act, in the 2012 UK Alcohol Strategy and by the Law Commission. Awards include honorary fellowship of the Royal College of Psychiatrists and the Faculty of Public Health and the 2008 Stockholm Criminology Prize. He was appointed CBE in the Queen's 2008 New Year Honours.
