Strategic Alliance alert: December 4, 2013

Supporting Prevention, Transforming Communities – 2014 and Beyond

As 2013 comes to a close, Congress continues its work to reach agreement over funding levels for fiscal years 2014 and beyond. At this time, it's critical that we educate members of Congress on the importance of the investments being made through the Prevention and Public Health Fund in communities across California. On December 10th, advocates from dozens of organizations will be on Capitol Hill asking Members of Congress to support the Fund. Public health advocates "outside the Beltway" can help out as well -- and it's critical that supporters in California share the impact that the infusion of prevention resources has had here in the Golden State.

Please join us for Supporting Prevention, Transforming Communities – 2014 and Beyond, an upcoming Dialogue4Health web forum on December 5th from 2:30 - 4:00 p.m. EST (11:30 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. PST), co-hosted by the American Public Health Association, Prevention Institute, Public Health Institute and Trust for America's Health, where we'll provide the information, tools, and resources to help you take action to support the Prevention Fund, even if you can't make it to DC on the 10th.

The web forum will provide an update from Capitol Hill staff on the federal budget situation and its impact upon the Prevention Fund. You will also hear directly from communities that have received Community Transformation Grants (CTG) through the Prevention Fund on the work they are doing to improve health outcomes and highlight their successes and important work.

Finally, the forum will detail specific strategies you can use, in coordination with the upcoming event, to engage members of Congress directly and through the media in order to educate them about how their communities and constituents are already benefitting from the Prevention Fund.

Speakers include:

  • A panel discussion with CTG community representatives lead by Genoveva Islas-Hooker, MPH, California Statewide CTG Project Coordinator, Public Health Institute
  • Becky Salay, Director of Government Relations, Trust for America's Health
  • Sana Chehimi, MPH, Program Director, Prevention Institute
  • Matthew Marsom, Vice President for Public Health Institute: Moderator

We hope you can join us – don’t forget to register for the web forum and, if you can make it, the event in DC on December 10th.
