The SF Board of Supervisors’ unanimous vote to ban the sale of mentholated tobacco products in the city is a critical win for prevention and health equity. Public health practitioners have advocated for a menthol ban for years, since menthol tobacco products have long been marketed to children, acting as an on-ramp for a lifetime addiction to tobacco, and are marketed aggressively to people of color and LGBTQ people. Like soda taxes and smoke-free spaces that have started locally and caught on nationwide, San Francisco’s menthol ban – including the board’s commitment to helping local corner stores shift their business models to emphasize healthy foods, not deadly products – should serve as a model for other communities.
