Administrative Director of COG Statistics, Public Health Institute

PHI is seeking a Administrative Director of COG Statistics for the Children’s Oncology Group. This position is located in Monrovia, CA.

The Children’s Oncology Group (COG), a National Cancer Institute supported clinical trials group, is the world’s largest organization devoted exclusively to childhood and adolescent cancer research. The COG unites more than 9,000 experts in childhood cancer at more than 200 leading children’s hospitals, universities, and cancer centers across North America, Australia, New Zealand, and Europe in the fight against childhood cancer. An overarching principle of COG is to ensure that the organization’s structure is optimized to maximize the potential for research that improves the outcome for every successive generation of children with cancer.

Reporting directly to the COG Group Statistician, the Administrative Director of the Statistics and Data Center will provide structural and organizational leadership on behalf of COG’s Group Statistician to direct administrative operations associated with and funded by the COG National Clinical Trials Network (NCTN) Statistics and Data Center Grant and any of its supplemental grants and funding.

The Director will be responsible for managing the COG’s NCTN Statistics and Data Center Grant and all other supporting grants; provide direction and management to administrative and project management staff and ensure the Statistics Department’s compliance with NCTN Guidelines and other regulatory requirements. S/he will ensure that the department’s goals and objectives are accomplished within required periods of performance and funding parameters and are compliant with current NIH grant policies or other relevant funding agencies’ policies. S/he will maintain tracking of COG staff involved in the Statistics Department’s grants and projects and oversee time and effort allocation and financial management of grants and projects under his/her purview. S/he will actively work with other directors and managers in COG, including clinical trials operations (leagues and teams) to ensure the success of COG.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  1. Act on behalf of the COG Group Statistician on all administrative activities associated with the COG Statistics Department, the NCTN Statistics and Data Center Grant, and other grants supporting the department.
  2. Develop grant submission proposals and meet all grant or project submission reporting deadlines, including progress reports.
  3. Cultivate and maintain effective communication strategies to ensure that statisticians and other staff across multiple locations are consistently kept up-date on relevant information.
  4. Oversee project management for the statisticians and manage COG project managers and administrative staff. Develop staffing and project management tools and reports to provide up to date operational information to the Group Statistician and Associate Group Statistician.
  5. Provide ongoing evaluation of the COG Statistics Department, developing strategies and recommendations for continuous improvement and oversee implementation of new programs and processes.
  6. Resolve and/or escalate issues in a timely fashion.
  7. Supervise departmental Administrative Assistant(s) and Project Manager(s). Manage their performance, develop employee performance expectations, and provide training as needed.
  8. Provide mentorship and guidance to staff in other departments engaged in projects and activities under his/her purview.
  9. Oversee the development, implementation and maintenance of standard policies and operating procedures for departmental activities. Working with COG, will ensure that these policies and operating procedures are aligned and integrated with overall COG policies and procedures.
  10. Establish and maintain an open professional environment with an emphasis on learning, accountability, flexibility, and high ethical standards; foster an organization-wide emphasis on customer satisfaction; ensure effective processes are in place and that staff is empowered to complete tasks in a timely and effective manner; evaluate and provide feedback, including performance improvement plans for personnel.
  11. Manage special projects and perform other duties as assigned by the COG Group Statistician.
  12. Represent COG Statistics on working groups, in meetings and teleconferences within the National Cancer Institute, with some travel occasionally being required.


To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field (Master’s preferred). At least 3 years of related management experience.
  • 5-10 years clinical research-related experience.
  • Experience working in and strong understanding of clinical trial operations.
  • Proven experience in managing multiple projects within a network environment.
  • Experience in research administration, budgeting and grant preparation with federal grant experience preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to supervise and manage staff.
  • Is comfortable working in a team environment
  • Must be competent in all components of Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Excellent written and oral communications skills, a service orientation and outstanding interpersonal skills are essential.
